The only childhood Christmas I remember clearly was when Santa left me the cowgirl outfit with the holster & gun, the fringed skirt, the cowboy hat. Don't remember getting boots, but they may have been there too. I wanted to be Dale Rogers and have a horse. The painting retreat on the coast of Maine, Freeport area, was magnificent. Mutt Mansion is simply a glorious spacious home on the water with views from every room. The light changed constantly, the tide went in and out, there was rain with its comforting pitter patter, snow to lightly coat the ground, sunshine to glitter the bay. It is always good to get home, and this was no exception; unpacked several paintings with more being mailed to me. 9 dog portraits! I guess Mutt Mansion is the place. In this painting I tried a new technique whereby I started with a textured substrate, painted many colors on at random and then "found" the pumpkin and leaves by painting the negative space. Fun and good for the brain because I have to think in terms of carving out the subject rather than painting it on the surface.

Hey, dear followers! I did re-name this painting just in case you've seen it before. Today I continued to work on the large commission piece, as well as a little work on a new painting. Then I did carpool, then taught piano lessons for a couple of hours, and now I'm trying to stay up til 9. Not sure if I'll make it! Anyway, I have to share my good news: this morning I happened to find out that I received the People's Choice award at the Scottsdale Artists School Best & Brightest juried show last Thurs.! I was so excited! And on top of that, I received a scholarship to a weekly class. To God be the glory. BTW this piece is painted on the 1.5" edges, ready to hang, and sells for $800. I wanted to try to imagine on canvas the scene of Bethlehem 2000 years ago. Looking up photos online, I saw that there are low hills there. I used a variety of printed tissue papers as my surface treatment including Happy Birthday, Christmas trees, Santas, etc. Then I used acrylic paints to depict the scene. I can only imagine what the Magi saw and how they followed that star.

$300 ~ I finished this painting this morning, the 2.5" edges are painted in the same green as the background, and it is ready to hang. Pumpkins are obviously one of my favorite subjects and I enjoy exploring various ways I can represent the fall staple. Also, it has been brought to my attention that I need to re-visit Vincent Van Gogh's letters. Somehow I can get waylaid in my thinking that good art will be rewarded in material gain. Vincent sold about one painting in his life, yet how many people have been delighted, inspired, and enamored by his artwork?
