This painting is about bright, saturated color and value differences. If you squint, you'll see where the darkest values are, as well as the mid-tones and lightest values. It's also about interesting shapes and mark-making. How does it make you feel? Does it make you think of something in particular? Just curious.

Using a limited palette of French Ultramarine, Cad Yellow Light, B&W, I also incorporated collage, mono printing, scraping, and pencil markings. I love this palette.

Sunset after Turner

Oil on Canvas, 11" x 14" $300

I have lately been exploring different palettes by the Masters.

I chose four palettes and used one basic composition

in order to clearly see what a difference a palette can make.

This is the second one.

Turner used tints, tones, and grays; also he didn't have whites

in his finished pieces. That would have taken away 

the intensity of his focal point. At least I think that's the reason.

Sunset

Oil, 11" x 14" $300

I've been experimenting with palettes

from the Masters.

This particular palette would be considered

that of the Post-Impressionists,

because it was painted with pure hues,

and so not mixed with other colors.

This saturation is what gives the piece INTENSITY.

Life Moments

Now I've accumulated many of them,

and it's interesting to see how different

I can make each one from the previous ones.

I've learned that I love complimentary colors 

and a limited palette.

Also using a special tool to apply

black ink

is quite satisfying.

Mostly I love to play with art materials

and sometimes

I end up with a winner.

Bird of Paradise

This all-over pattern of bold, bright, and cheery

colors and patterns

had a bird sneak in.

This painting was so much fun to create.

It came about without any pre-conceived ideas

of what it would be. 

I simply started making circles

and let the intuition take over.

The painting is on a very sturdy stretched canvas

with wide painted sides.

So it's ready to hang in a kid's room,

a kitchen, family room,

or an office.

Now that we live near the beach (YAY),

I just have to do a few beach and ocean scenes

in addition to my abstracts.

I was pleased with this one.

I began by painting the scene in black and white

until I got the values right. Then I matched the colors

in value to what was on the canvas.

Summer Delicacy

Sometimes it's harder to create a "simple"

painting than it is to create a complicated one.

Probably because every line, every mark, every edge

is important. Whereas in a complicated/large/complex

painting, edges and lines and marks get lost in the overall image.

I love something contemplative and tender in a painting,

though I cannot always create such a thing.

Misty Beach Day
